GraphicPécs Festival

the first edition
2022-2023

The first edition of the festival was held from November 10, 2022 to January 8, 2023. Six exhibitions in five different places (including the M21 Gallery, the Pécs Gallery, and the cinema in the city center), as well as lectures and book presentations were organized in various places in the city of Pécs during the festival. To mark the occasion, the major exhibition of the festival, entitled Posters from around the world, curated by Michel Bouvet and Fanny Laffitte (Atelier Michel Bouvet), opened in the huge M21 Gallery in the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter. Building on its success, the exhibition has been extended until February 12, 2023. In the same museum, In Motion presented posters, some of them interactive, created by ten European art schools. Finally, the Plakátok/Posters exhibition from the archives of the iconic Pécs Gallery was, once again, curated by Sándor Pinczehelyi.

Posters from around the world

An anthology of posters from all over the world

M21 Gallery
2022.11.10 - 2023.02.12

Actually, we can see everything on the Internet: artworks of the past and present, painting, sculpture, architecture and photography… However, the exhibition and the museum are incomparable places for the encounter with real masterpieces. Nowadays, the success of the great artistic exhibitions is the most vibrant testimony of it. Posters, sometimes visible on the screens, take their true flight only on the walls of the cities, in priority, or on those of the galleries and the museums. There, one can see the quality of the paper, the printing, but also the diversity of inks, styles, subjects and formats.
The book or the catalog, in particular that of the biennials, restores, by reproducing them, the posters within the framework of an editorial project, but also memorial, because they are documented, contextualized and dated. It is an indispensable tool in the knowledge and recognition of posters.
The books devoted to them, but also the catalogs of the poster biennials, as they exist all over the world, are also and above all – Google does not allow everything – a place of discoveries, often unpublished, impossible to make in other circumstances.

The exhibition Posters from around the world is the result of several years of research and collections of posters built up over time. It is also the result of numerous meetings with their authors, graphic designers and poster artists, in their countries of origin around the world. It thus presents, even if it is not, obviously, exhaustive, an extraordinary worldwide panorama of the contemporary poster. These 135 graphic designers or collectives, from 50 countries on 5 continents, each present a selection of posters among the most representative of their talent. Some of them are famous worldwide for having designed posters that have become true icons over the years. However, many of them are revealed to the public for the very first time in this exhibition. The incredible diversity of themes in these 430 posters testifies to an extremely wide range of artistic and typographic practices. All generations and all graphic styles are represented (drawing, painting, photography, collage, digital…). Countries, sometimes ignored or unknown on the international graphic scene, are revealed. They stand side by side, in all fairness, with countries that are regularly represented. All this constitutes an anthology of artists fully engaged in the society and the country where they live and work. Whether they come from developed or less developed countries, whether it is cultural, sports, political or commercial posters, by their contribution to the improvement of visual communication in their respective countries, these 135 graphic designers are major actors in the international artistic community. These 430 artworks from all over the world invite us on an extraordinary journey to the land of posters.
