ACTION ! 130 YEARS OF FILM POSTERS
Exhibition - M21 Gallery, Pécs
This exhibition is a deep dive into the bedrock of world cinema history, told through the posters of films that have profoundly shaped the history of cinema. It is an exceptional journey through images, the posters, presenting an anthology of outstanding films from all over the world. The exhibition follows a chronological path, from the invention of cinema by the Lumière brothers to the present day. The decades follow one another to show the evolution of filmmaking practices and the great movements that marked them, as well as the evolution of the artists in charge of representing the films through a poster.
Here, visitors discover, or rediscover, the films that left their mark and told the story of the world, but also those, often the very same, that shaped our personal imaginations.
Cinema is at once a social, political and aesthetic mirror of each era and each decade, and a journey of the imagination into the deeply personal universe of directors, possessed by the making of their work.
The posters presented in the exhibition, several hundred in all, are those of each film’s country of origin. Every one of them has the same mission : to tell the story of the film with a single image. It was, and still is, a real challenge, but also a heavy burden for those who created, and still create, them. For the public, the poster is the first and decisive encounter with the film. It must be concise, seductive, at times intriguing, in order to catch the viewer’s eye.
This exhibition is a tribute to all those who have shaped the history of cinema (directors, screenwriters, actors and actresses, technicians…), but also to the poster artists, graphic designers, artists and photographers who, through their posters, have brilliantly captured the essence of each film.
